Statisticians bring numbers to life in the classroom

In the 2024-2025 school year, more than 300 students have already received a workshop on Statbel Junior.

The staff from Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, visits primary and secondary schools, and works on the new Statbel Junior website.

Both teachers and students respond very enthusiastically to the workshops. Teachers appreciate the practical insights in the website and the visualisations of data, which they can also immediately apply in their lessons or theme weeks.

Students engage with the website, playing the quiz and eagerly collecting Statistimals, searching for the number of people their own age in their municipality, the most popular first names, traffic accidents or figures on agriculture. Moreover, the tool also allows you to compare a lot of figures with other municipalities. Age pyramids soon become Christmas trees, towers and spinning tops.

The new Statbel Junior website is designed to inspire young and old alike with accessible and engaging statistics on all Belgian municipalities. Thanks to our colleagues' visits, students have not only gained a better understanding of data analysis, but also of how statistics help understand the world around us.

You are a teacher or you know someone interested in a workshop? Please contact statliteracy@economie.fgov.be. We would love to come and explore with you the world of statistics.
